Groups with SEND

Free, tailored workshops designed for learners with SEND

We’ve worked with specialist teachers to develop workshops and digital resources for learners with SEND (special educational needs and disabilities). We want everyone to have an enjoyable and comfortable visit to the Archive, and so we will always aim to adapt the workshops to best fit the needs and requirements of your learners.

Workshops are 60-90 minutes long and take place in our Learning room and exhibition space, and are supported by pre-visit resources including visual stories, a sensory map and a pre-visit film. We also have a range of physical resources on-site to support learners during your visit.

The exhibition and Learning room have level access throughout and we have an accessible loo. The nearest Changing Places toilet is a 2 minute walk away in the Esther Simpson building (a University of Leeds building with public access).

Primary Schools

We have three themed workshops. You can choose one or do all three as a series of visits. Each workshop follows the same structure and includes time to get to know the space, two activities relevant to the theme and two short breaks.

History

Your learners will find out about how everyday life in the past was different, and what has stayed the same. Explore our interactive Penny Bazaar shop, and get hands-on matching up old and new objects.

Design - Colour, shape and texture

Learners will explore our archive biscuit tins and make their own collage biscuit tin design. Sort out our original and replica objects by colour and shape, and in any other way the learners can think of!

Express Yourself

Your learners will explore our collection of dressing up clothes, create outfits to match our pictures or decide what they would wear for a special occasion. They can choose an artefact that expresses something about them, make a label and display their objects.

Secondary Schools and 16+ Settings

Choose from four themed workshops. For each session there’s a menu of interactive activities to choose from so you can tailor the visit to your learning aims and your learners’ interests.

Shopping

Learners will develop and practice skills around shopping for food, including making a shopping list, money skills and working out best value deals.

Design Skills

This workshop takes place over two visits.

  • Inspiration visit – learners explore the Archive and find out about packaging and clothing design, we’ll set a design brief and learners will create their own mood board to collect their ideas.
  • Showcase visit – bring your learners’ final designs back to the Archive so they can present their ideas, and we’ll display their work in the exhibition space for friends and family to come and see too.

Retail Skills

Choose from a selection of activities that will support learners to explore skills commonly used in retail jobs. Practice customer service skills, product display or interview skills.

Food Technology

It’s all about chocolate! Find out about the M&S Chocolate Melting Middle Pudding, choose from a selection of chocolatey experiments to do (learners can create a hypothesis to test), and then taste test the pudding itself.

Retail Skills Digital Resource Pack

Explore some of the skills and roles involved in working in retail with your secondary students. Based on real-world M&S customer service training materials, this pack contains activities, discussion ideas, resources and films to support interactive lessons, providing opportunities for students to gain and develop knowledge and skills.
